Air biathlon is a brand new kind of sport and since it is us who invented it – we may claim that Russia is the motherland of air biathlon! It was founded 2014. The essence of this sport is that a pilot besides performing standard air exercises, does the shooting from a laser gun Laser Tag. Its principle is used in TV remote control. Laser tag – is the process of directing of a safe laser beam on an IR receiver which is worn by a pilot or placed in the center of the target (cross). The judge can manage (recharge, activate and deactivate) pilots’ guns within 300 meters or more. Judge’s laptop is showing the number of shots and goal hits done by pilots. Firing distance is up to 200 meters and depends on: luminosity, atmospheric transparency, effective radiated power. Thus pilots are put in equal conditions; Russia’s IT engineers developed special programs which modify IR signal into a radio signal after hitting the target and then the signal goes to a judge’s laptop.
There have been four air biathlon cups held in Russia. Sportsmen are looking forward to participating in this competition as applications are sent in two years in advance. Austrian and Polish pilots have also participated in the contests. This sort of contest cuts down the number of judges to 1-2 excluding distortion and fake results. It is recommended for fiesta kind of competitions with minimum judges and maximum interest on sportsmen’s side. We excluded markers, introduced automated judgement but pilots retained enthusiasm of sports battle, competitive spirit and strive for victory!
Exercises for air biathlon:
15.2 JUDGE DECLARED GOAL. AIR BIATHLON (JDG AB)
15.2.1 Each pilot should do the maximum target hits. The number of shots is not limited if other specified by the sports director.
15.2.2 Task data:
a. position of set goal/target
15.2.3. Result – number of hits. The more hits the better is the result; 10 hits are scored.
15.6 HARE AND HOUNDS AIR BIATHLON (HNH AB)
15.6.1 Competitors will follow a hare balloon and attempt to achieve a mark or valid track point close to a target displayed by the hare no more than two meters upwind of the basket after landing.
15.6.2 Task data:
a. description of the hare balloon
b. intended flight duration of the hare balloon
15.6.3 The result is the number of hits. The more hits the better is the result;
15.6.4 Variation from intended flight duration of the hare shall not be ground for complaint.
15.6.5 The hare may deflate after landing and may be removed from the field.
15.6.6 The hare may display a banner hanging below his basket. No competitor shall display any banner hanging below the basket during this task.
5.7 WATERSHIP DOWN AIR BIATHLON (WSD АВ)
15.7.1 Competitors will fly to the launch point of a hare balloon, follow the hare and attempt to achieve a mark or valid track point close to a target displayed by the hare no more than two meters upwind of the basket after landing.
15.7.2 Task data:
. a. description of the hare balloon
. b. location of the launch point of the hare balloon
. c. set take-off time of the hare balloon
. d. intended flight duration of the hare balloon
15.7.3 The result is the number of hits. The more hits the better is the result
15.7.4 If the hare balloon does not take off within 5 minutes after the set time then this task is considered cancelled.
15.7.5 Variation from the flight duration of the hare shall not be ground for complaint.
15.7.6 The hare may deflate after landing and may be removed from the field.
15.7.7 The hare may display a banner hanging below his basket. No competitor shall display any banner hanging below the basket during this task.
15.21 GROUND AND AIR. AIR BIATHLON (GA AB)
15.21.1 Competitors will follow a hare balloon and attempt to achieve a mark or valid track point close to a target displayed by the hare no more than two meters upwind of the basket after landing.
15.21.2 Task data:
a. description of the hare balloon
b. intended flight duration of the hare balloon
15.21.3 Variation from intended flight duration of the hare shall not be ground for complaint.
15.21.4 The hare may deflate after landing and may be removed from the field.
15.21.5 The hare may display a banner hanging below his basket. No competitor shall display any banner hanging below the basket during this task.
15.21.7 The attacking pilot will stop attack from hit from the earth. After 10 hits from land team of a hare the gun of the pilot will be blocked automatically
Hare balloon’s pilot should be wearing a head-receiver band which receives IR signals. The band should be left open and seen from the side of the Hare
15.22. AIR AND AIR. AIR BIATHLON (AA AB)
15.22.1 Target balloon takes off 3-5 minutes prior to the general approved designated take-off time. Participants’ balloons take off and try to enter the target balloon’s in the IR marker space of coverage. Task to mark the target located in a balloon basket.
On each balloon there is the IR transmitter and receiver signal.
15.22.2 Target balloon’s mark by IR marker is the attackers balloons.
Later (the number of hits which is scored depending on the number of participants), the attacker’s gun is blocked in order not to interfere with other participants engaged in the attack.
15.22.6. Hare’s balloon’s pilot or his assistant is protected from attacking balloonists. The number of shots is not limited if other specified by the sports director. "The Hare" is not limited in shots. Should the Hare blocked the attacking balloon his shots are scored and summed up with formula: Scores = 1000*n/N, where n – number of participants blocked by the Hare; N – number of participants who took off.
